What Camera and Lenses Does Yervant Use

Photographer: Yervant

Specialty: Weddings

Favored Brand: Canon

You know how you know you’re kicking @$$ and taking names in the wild world of wedding photography? You go by one freaking name.

Some of our favorite wedding photographerss, like Jose Villa and Jessica Claire, are hauling home 5-figure checks for shooting weddings.

But none have reached the one-nameness of the legendary Yervant, who is by default, the Bono/Cher/Beyonce of wedding photography.

And oh yeah, the Australian-Armenian (or is it Armenian-Australian?) Yervant has both an awesome personality and off-the-charts photographic skills.

Check out homeboy’s skill:

Now, it was actually more difficult than I thought to track down exactly what Yervant was using, until I stumbled onto Canon’s Australia site.

Yervant’s main camera body is the Canon EOS 1d Mark IV. In his own words:

“This is my favourite camera. The extra weight is an advantage to minimise shake, it’s better balanced than the 5D when I hold it, and the colour reproduction looks 3-dimensional.”

Yervant’s favorite lens is the Canon 50mm f/1.2 L-series prime. About it, he said this:

“This is a beautiful lens. If I only owned one lens this would be it.”

Editor’s Note: The Canon 50mm f/1.2 is probably the most popular lens in the world for top-dollar wedding photographers, including Yervant, Jose Villa, and Jasmine Star. That makes sense, given its beautiful image quality and amazing construction. As a side note, it also tends to have extremely high resale value. However, if you can’t swing the money, the 50mm f/1.4 will give you 90% of the quality for 20% of the price.

Yervant also uses the 5D Mark II, occasionally for video. In terms of lenses, aside from the 50mm f/1.2, he is a very big fan of the Canon 14mm f/2.8, and the 24-105mm f/4 zoom.

Bottom line, if you want to shoot like Yervant, I wouldn’t go crazy buying new gear like the $5,000+ 1D M4. Instead, I’d pick up that affordable 50mm f/1.4 ASAP to get those dreamy, sharp subject with blurry background lifestyle images,  and a great educational book like Jose Villa’s stunning Fine Art Wedding Photography.
