What Camera Does Nigel Barker, Noted Fashion Photographer, Use?

by Buffalo Bob on October 5, 2011

Photographer: Nigel Barker

Specialty: Fashion

Favored Brand: Sony

We all know Nigel Barker as the “Noted Fashion Photographer” from America’s Next Top Model. As it turns out, Nigel’s more than an interchangeable talking head on Tyra Banks’ team. He’s actually a seriously accomplished fashion and beauty photographer, having shot campaigns for the likes of Saks Fitch Avenue, Nicole Miller, Bulgari, Cover Girl, Ted Baker, Sean John, among many others.

Nigel’s definitely got an independent streak in terms of gear. During episodes of America’s Next Top Model, Nigel can be seen using Phase One medium-format cameras with digital backs, which are almost certainly rented for the show.

Other times, Nigel’s main camera is the full-frame, 24.6 megapixel Sony A900.

Why does he love the A900? In his words:

“…the fact of the matter is the new SONY A900 DSLR is the best digital SLR camera I have ever shot with for a number of reasons. Other than the fact it holds well, is weighted perfectly and has a range of Zeiss lenses, the actual 25 Mega Pixel files are gorgeous. The color reproduction blows the competition out of the water and the way the pixels are organized replicates a high res transparency that’s been scanned in rather than a digital file – stunning! I actually replaced all my DSLRs and lenses for a full Sony kit.”

For lenses, Nigel uses the best of the best Sony/Zeiss lenses, including the 135mm f/1.8, and the 24-70mm f/2.8 zoom.

Now, if you’re looking to get started in fashion photography, I wouldn’t be in a rush to buy these expensive pieces of gear. Why not start with a little education and inspiration? I’d check out these two books:

For education: Fashion Photography by Bruce Smith

For inspiration: Avedon Fashion 1944-2000
